UNICOPS – Europe’s United Response to Protect Campuses from CBRNE Threats

21 Partners from 11 EU-Countries Unite to Build Resilience Against CBRNE Threats in Academic Institutions

Lodz, Poland – The UNICOPS project has officially commenced its core research and operational activities, marking a significant step toward enhancing the resilience and safety of university campuses across the European Union against Chemical, Biological, Radiological/Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) threats.

Creating a secure yet open academic environment is both a challenge and a necessity in today’s world. The UNICOPS initiative represents a crucial step in achieving this balance,” said Karolina Tomczyk, Project Coordinator, University of Lodz.

The UNICOPS initiative— Universal CBRNE protection system supporting the safety and open nature of higher education institutions — aims to design and implement comprehensive, integrated systems that address complex CBRNE risks within academic settings through thorough research, surveys, and in-depth site visits involving faculty, students, security staff, and administrators to evaluate threats and vulnerabilities. The findings will shape the development of a tailored protection system encompassing risk mitigation protocols, security best practices, and a purpose-built emergency response platform. Key components will be validated through three full-scale field exercises in Slovakia, Greece, and Poland.

The project is led by the University of Lodz (Poland) and brings together a network of 21 partners from across Europe, each offering specialized expertise in security, law enforcement, higher education, and innovation. Project partners include:
